Training on Hygienic Meat Production and Value Addition concludes at Vet Varsity

Ludhiana, August 13, 2019 (Akash Sharma): Department of Livestock Products Technology Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana organised five day Hands-on-training programme on ‘Hygienic Meat Production and Value Addition’, for the butchers/floor level workers of meat industry with an intention to safe guard the health of the meat consumers of Ludhiana by way of hygienic, wholesome, clean meat production. Dr. Manish Kumar Chatli, HoD of Livestock Products Technology informed that Directorate of Extension Education, GADVASU has sponsored this training programme under Rashtriya Krishi Vigyan Yojana (RKVY), Govt of India for the benefits of Schedule caste/Schedule Tribes. This course content of training programme included scientific slaughtering and dressing methods, “Do’s & Don’t” of meat handling, personal hygiene, disposal, utilization of byproducts and development of value added meat products. The experts discussed about meat standards and legal regulations for setting up a meat shop.

Dr Harish Verma, Director Extension Education distributed “Hygiene kit” (gum shoes, SS meat cutting knife, apron, gloves, mouth and head gear etc.) to the participants. He has also released a compendium developed by the department faculty for this training programme. Total 20 participants have attended the training including butchers, meat shop owners and small entrepreneurs. The participants visited Modern Poultry Processing Plant to have better practical exposure. Dr Harish Verma, distributed the certificates to the participants on successful completion of the training and said that the clean meat production is first step to safeguard the health of meat consumers. He also stressed on the processing and value addition for employment and revenue generation.

Dr A.S. Nanda, Vice Chancellor, GADVASU stressed on the augmentation of the processing of meat industry byproducts for environment protection. He further emphasized that the indiscrete disposal of byproducts may lead to spread of various infectious diseases including rabies in dogs. According to an estimate every year almost 20,000 deaths occurs due to rabies. He applauded the efforts of Directorate for organizing a programme which has outreach to the grass root level workers of the society for the sanitation measures with a substantial contribution to “Swachach Bharat Mission”.
